This is a good way to advise stakes. You don't try to get back your money lost in gambling same day and same spot. If you notice is not a winning day, you need to move on to another day. Trying to go back for recovery can make you lose all you have because you may have lost reasoning, analysis and observation of little signals that can help you do a good winning analysis.
This is also relating to lost trades, you can take a break and come back in later.

Both gradual way and instantly betting big amount can result to more loss too. The gradual option to get back the $50k will require an effective strategy which obviosuly if he lose $50k in the first place means he doesn't have that strategy. He did keep that secret but losing an amount that big only reveals a more daring secret like not plans even just a simple martingale.
