A basic glimpse and answer to your question can easily be found in shape of DeFi projects, yes, there are much more things that can be done and i think we will see whole lot of financial products on blockchain governed by smart contracts.

The use of smart-contracts in the financial sector went far beyond the DEFI concept. Since its lunch with ethereum virtual machine, the goal was to build apps that facilitate management of things (started with money transactions) but didn't surpass that level because of other factors (regulations/laws...).
