It is already a substitute for some merchants but not all. The pandemic seemingly became an opportunity for merchants to adopt it but due to how unstable the price is, they might find it hard to adopt it.
Plus asking for the number one world digital curency? I don't think we'll have one.

I cannot imagine have a one world digital currency because not all of the people are inclined to use new technologies as others are still attached to the traditional system. And concerning bitcoin, government would not want a currency either that they can't no longer control because its a decentralized one. But maybe in the future, if there will be an advanced technology for all of us, and it becomes centralized too, then maybe it will be possible in the future.
