What you need the wallet for? Secure Storage of your coins! Sending coins to friends, services, or just paying for anything. Maybe even playing casino-style games with it.
Pooled mining? Yes, you need your wallet. And you should be using it anyways! MPOS pools should be setup to auto-payout with a rather low setting (make sure it makes sense because of tx fees they charge you) and have it payout automatically in your wallet. YOU want to own your currency, not have someelse full access to your funds.
If you are using a P2Pool (such as this one: http://94.23.196.92:7777) you use your walletaddress as a username and it get's implemented into the block generation code (hash) because the block pays directly to you! The whole point of crypto currencies is to have a safer way to do money. And by giving all your money to an MPOS pool and trusting him he won't "steal" it isn't any different than using banks and payment services (PayPal, and many others!) today.
