To answer this question you need to make a distinction between the short term (balancing market) and the long term market. I assume your questions is related to the balancing market. The balancing market is a market to enable the grid to be balanced. For example, market participants buy and sell power on a 15 mins time interval. The load demands are dependent on weather, especially for renewable energy sources, and the stability of production assets, e.g. variances in availability of wind and solar have an impact on the KWh power produced. Another reason for imbalances are unexpected outages when a power station unexpectedly goes offline. A third variable is pricing, if prices swing unexpectedly it might be beneficial to reduce or ramp up the output of a power plant accordingly.
