It works fine for me most of the time. Sometimes not all cards or all denominations are available.

I've seen the stories, and I haven't tried it, but it's not something I worry about. Even if I pay by voucher, Amazon charges my creditcard with a 0.00 euro reservation. So if their gift card "bounces" (which would be rediculous to begin with!), they won't lose money.
