I'm not sure but I guess money/bank debt issues and wife threatening husband to make divorced when gambling addiction pursues doesn't work most of the time. But health issues can.
I did not step into the shoe of a heavy gambling addict, but all I can say is, it's kinda almost unstoppable. The same urges you feel with alcohol and cigarette addiction. Only you and yourself could help you not totally stop gambling, but minimize and put control over it. Total gambling stoppage is impossible for anyone who is addicted.

Maybe the cases you mentioned will make my mind change and stop gambling but so far it didn't came to me since I always make sure that I'm handling my finances very well as well I also assure that I deposit only less amount of money and never refill back once those balance I put on the casino drained already. For being addicted already for sure stopping it will be almost impossible because their day will not be completed without playing gambling, and that is what's on their head all the day.
