I think it will be insane to accept fake tokens as payment not unless the seller has zero knowledge about cryptocurrency. If that's the case, he should have do a research about the coin first before accepting it. Scammers are everywhere and we can't get rid of them easily but the best thing to do to avoid being scammed is to be skeptical especially if there's money or property involved.

Assuming that the story is real and it is not fabricated in order to try to scare people away from cryptocurrencies, this should show us to always be careful when it comes to big transactions and using a medium of payment which we are not familiar with, if a person is not familiar with cryptocurrencies and they have never accepted them as a way of payment during their entire lives I think is a mistake sell their house and receive cryptocurrencies in return, they could easily ask the buyer to sell their coins at an exchange and then send that money to their bank accounts.
