really why is sha256 just not suited well for the gpu arch compared to Ethash? Is there that many more btc miners to make it that difficult? Seems like there is a lot of eth miners I would assume it would have the same issues

It's not that sha256 is not suited for GPU's - it's that the algo is very easily implemented in 'hard wired' ASIC's with out any of the other circuits and a GPU has in it.

Current BTC hash rate is several 10's of ExaH/s so yes, its difficulty is *very* high.
