I don't think it is anymore. The amount of wasted gas used to be high a decade ago but it has been decreasing. In fact a couple of years ago the head of NISOC talked about the major ongoing project to zero the amount of gas flares and use that gas for many things including in power plants for electricity generation, in refineries, etc.

Keep in mind that Iran with its 90 million population is also one of the biggest gas consumers.

It is good to hear that the gas is not wasted.

Here in India we are almost completely dependent on LNG cargoes from Qatar. And they are making insane profits now, by jacking up the prices by 10x or 20x. If that damn pipeline was completed on time, then we would have been in much better condition.
