Real Madrid is a big club and they want to win La Liga as well as Champions League. They did not focus on Champions League only and sacrificed La Liga at the season start or before World Cup ending. I don't know what actually happened in Real Madrid after World Cup 2022 but their performance in La Liga dropped a lot since January, after World Cup ending. Perhaps their players were tired and lacked of focus on La Liga. They lost many points because they could not score winning goals.

Gradually they fell more behind Barcelona till a time they had to decide to only focus on Champions League but it is not their initial plan.

I don't think so. We must think back that two seasons ago, maybe many of us did not think Real Madrid could win Champions League with many old players. They and Carlo Ancelotti won that Champions League and in the past season, they were not too far from another Champions League final match. With old players, it is more difficult for them to maintain good performances in a very long league season and perhaps it is their biggest problems in the past season.
