You have to run it on your own node. It's required. Joinmarket is a software that works with RPC to your Bitcoin client, you can't connect to a client you don't control of, and neither should you. As for Jam, while I've tried it, I think it lacks some features yet, and it's still in beta so I wouldn't trust it with huge amounts.
