Your answer is very interesting, too from the psychological perspective. I'm not an expert but I know that people usually believe what they want to believe, and nobody likes his "shadow", quoting Jung.

The level of self-consciousness and humility to admit one's flaws is really high, and most of us mortals struggle with it because of our own Egos. That's why external help is needed in most of the cases, because others can clearly see what one often denies.

I agree, btw, that satisfaction from real-world triumphs can be so high as the ones you get with any addiction, but after reaching certain point one needs to detoxify from certain practices and substances in order to start enjoying these more natural pleasures again.

Let's face it, not all gamblers out there have a good grip on life. I guess that is not that different from other people that are not gamblers and do not either have a good hold on their life, but when you are gambling for fun it may be easier for them to go past the line because they have other problems around - family, money, work, relations,... All that ends up reflected in their playing.
