Like the Ledger Hardware wallet, the S recovery update can recover your seedphrases or wallet.
I think you're referring to the Ledger Recovery feature that Ledger released this year - and earned them a huge shitstorm?
If so, the recovery feature is only available for the Nano X and only where a firmware upgrade has been performed. Nano X without firmware upgrade cannot use the feature, neither can Nano S. As an end customer, you still have some room for maneuver to be "safe".
