Assuming Villarreal was able to hold them to a draw, like many analysts were suggesting, it would have been a big motivation for Girona to do their best to win Alaves tonight as to increase their gap with Madrid. Now that Real Madrid have temporarily climbed top of the league, any mistake from Girona will make Madrid comfortably sited there for a long time. The only distraction they will have is champions league matches.

This is where the experience of Real Madrid come into play. As the season progresses, they will know how to manage their matches such that they will not be far from the top while expecting Girona to make as much mistakes as they can. It will be be easier for Girona to fall into this trap given that they are not as experienced as real Madrid.
