Of course you have to tell their family members, being a good friend is not only partying together and having a good time, sometime you need to take difficult decisions that may put a strain on your friendship or even destroy it, and this is one of those cases.

If one of your friends is suffering from an addiction you need to try to help them, and one of the easiest ways to do this is by involving their family, now your friend may even hate you because of it, but even if that is the case you did the right thing by telling their family the truth.

Just because they are your family doesn't mean we should address them as loved ones, if he can open up to his friends and not his family, there is more that you dont know about your friend and his families.

Think about it, aren't we supposed to be more opened to our so called loved ones than friends? The connection we always have within thr family is always stronger than the ones we have with friends, because blood will always be blood.

Someone you can address as your blood is different from someone who isn't in any way a part of your family, so if I feel reluctant to say anything to my family and instead I open up to my friends then, it's possible that I am not in good terms with my family, or I fear that they will want to shame me instead of helping me.
