All VPNs are going to somewhat slow the speed of your connection to any site because that is how the system works and it requires firstly a greater amount of data transfer from point to point and it requires the computing effort of deciphering the encrypted point to point messaging.

Sites have to have the right resources to accept VPN traffic and somehow understand this is more expensive and has to make business sense.

Well, of course, such IP anonymity requires significantly more network resources to implement it compared to direct access to a certain site from your real IP. Sometimes this slowdown has a completely insignificant effect on the process of packet transmission and the player may not even notice the slowdown in a real game. This, as I understand it, makes it possible to use a VPN even in games that require fairly quick player reactions. But as I understand it, we are talking about a significant slowdown that affects the game, and maybe even prevents it from being played normally.
This is of course a problem. And most likely, many free, or even sometimes paid VPNs, are often simply not able to speed up the exchange with their technical means to a level acceptable to the given player.
