Brest is actually a team competing in the middle of the table, but last season they were surprisingly able to show a very good performance so that they were able to be in 3rd position and also go to the Champions League to represent Ligue 1 with Paris Saint Germain and Monaco. It was an achievement for them because they were able to show something good like that. This season they started the league with a less than good performance so that they have already felt 2 defeats. I personally am not too surprised if Brest declines at this time, because they have just been in the top board and maybe they are not used to the pressure and expectations that come to them. There is still time for them to rise and return to showing performance like last season.
Agree with you, that's why fans shouldn't have high expectations of them this season, especially in the Champions League. Mid-table teams in any league will certainly not easily win Champions League matches, as a result they tend to fail in the early stages and not qualify for the round of 16. Brest was good last season in Ligue 1, as was Leverkusen who made a fantastic record in the Bundesliga. But if you look at their performance this season, everything is different.
I tend to be more optimistic about Monaco in the Champions League this season than Brest. Monaco has a good mentality as a competitor, but so far only PSG is really the favorite to qualify for the round of 16. We will obviously never know if and how all these teams will perform in the Champions League, but I think the reality is not too far from what I am saying.
