Batting meltdown is a big reason but it wasn't the only reason and batting collapse at the top has been happening regularly for quite some time.

IMHO and honestly India's home dominance came to an end because both Ashwin and Jadeja had an off series, especially Ashwin. These 2 stalwarts were the unmoved ingredients in 12 years of home dominance and they were the savior and bailed us out with the bat countless times and with the ball every single time.

If these 2 guys had a satisfactory series with the bat then the result could've been different, there is an inside joke and meme for a reason that Indian real batting starts at 6th,7th, and 8th numbers.
