It's actually a matter of approach, because gambling can and should be fun, and for me personally it's much less evil than drugs or alcohol, although of course I don't want to minimize the problems that arise from any kind of addiction. Yes, I didn't mean you meant that either, and I agree with you that addiction to substances are worse in general than gambling addiction, exceptions apart. For one reason gambling is legal in most non Islamic countries, but hard drugs aren't. Even if we compared gambling with legal substances like alcohol or tobacco, I would keep thinking that the comparison is unfair. But I can understand how someone who had a very bad experience, like the OP, can think otherwise.

While most persons even claim to be addicted, at times it is not a case of such what literally is the problem is greed, some people are not addicted they just want to risk it all knowing they have minimal chances of hitting the target. Getting gambling addicted is not as easy as we might claim, a lot of people quit gambling as soon as their loses keep going over their wins unlike drugs and substances that has side effects as soon as one tries to avoid it, doing that comparison is totally insane, gambling addiction is far less compared to drugs addiction.

If at all OP had made fortunes from his gambling he would have turned to a gambling motivator and advices on how to trust feelings into taking risk, there is always repercussions for either of our choices, so if he lost then he is paying for his actions.
