The majority of the people out there do not understand how money works, with many people I know still thinking that money is backed by gold or silver, and when I tell them this is not the case and nothing but our belief that is worth something is what backs it, they cannot accept it, then it is not surprising they cannot really understand how gambling works and why it is a bad idea to use money they cannot really afford to lose by risking it in an activity that over the long term is guaranteed to bring them losses.

if someone knows nothing about money and want to start understanding how it works, what would you recommend? books? which ones?

I agree with you that most are clueless and careless with their money and don't put the minimum effort to learn more about it and change their financial situation
