Yep, trust but verify. When received, I typically check coin addresses again the public lists provided to see if any discrepancies. If/when there are, I have followed up with the coin makers to see if it's me or them. When BGC036 was received, the address should have been checked again public list which would have shown discrepancies and then follow up with maker could have occurred in order to rectify- doesn't appear this happened.
