Last time I heard Satochip is making improvements with their app, so there could be alternative ways for using Satochip, but for now you will need to have card reader.
I also suggest first checking Satochip set-up videos on youtube.

I have two card readers, although one may be of an older production (just to check compatibility with older devices).
As the wallet will not be in daily use after setting it up, It will be in a safe for a long time, it is not a priority for me to have a new reader. Although I would rather opt for a contactless one, given that Satochip has NFC integrated.
