Willingness to retire early or later in life depends on the kind of job that a person does, if it's the typical 8 to 5 hours jobs and any other types of jobs that is physically hard, the desire will be high. If you love your job and it's not mentally and physically stressful to you then ofcourse you wouldn't consider retiring, you can work as long as your body and mind can take in old age. The human body and mind are supposed to be active because we're created to always function and be productive, although our productivity can reduce in old age but we're supposed to keep going as long as we can. When I'm old I'd definitely want to quit hard jobs but I won't quit easily on jobs that requires deep thinking like monitoring my investments and diversifying my funds into other profitable ventures.
9 to 5 jobs aren't that hateful, many people enjoy it because you can build the relationship with the same people over and over, the change is low too because your jobs are mostly same over and over. Many people choose to work 9 to 5 jobs until they old, if the company you work have a good environment, I'm sure you will think many times to retire since you don't want lost colleagues that kind to you.
Investing when you're old isn't easy, you could get heart attack if your plan doesn't go as your expectation.
