I think it's just us being human which is why the number of gambling addicts has grown. We always want more, we are greedy, and let's not deny that. But there are those who can control this greed that's why they can also prevent more losses and even take home a win. Then, there are those who keep their innocence when it comes to gambling which is why they have no trouble at all.
The growth of online casinos and the cheap way to gamble are also big factors today. If people have a hard time gambling because of less access then I don't think there will be many people who will do it.

Well, I grew up to believe and know that who ever really wants to do something will do it regardless of how hard or challenging it, and even speaking of if people had a had time gambling, there have never been a time people had hard time finding a casino to gamble if they wanted to, before the emergence of online casinos there were offline casinos scattered everywhere across several streets in different locations on a state and country, no one interested in gambling had any hard time finding a place to do it.

And if for example, Today there is still nothing known as an online casinos available yet, there would have been a significant growth in the number of physical casinos than we see today.
