This is true - and part of the responsibility for this probably lies with us who helped them to brand themselves at a time when we considered them a company that produces good devices for secure storage of cryptocurrencies. However, back then there weren't nearly as many alternatives as there are today, it was literally an option to buy an L or a T.
People shouldn't be responsible for recommending a product that worked as advertised at the time. It's a different story now after we have heard and seen everything that has happened with Ledger. It would be irresponsible to recommend them now without at least to mentioning the bad things that happened in the past and the potential disasters that lie in the future.

I looked at my old Model X and it says on the back that it was made in France - does yours say the same? I don't know about those older models, but I think I read a few years ago that their devices are manufactured in China, and only partially assembled in France - and by some strange law, you can declare any such product as being made in France or the EU.
Ledger gets its hardware components from China and assembles some parts on its own assembly line. So technically, it's not made in either China or France entirely: both countries have a hand in the manufacturing process.

This "trick" is used in all industries. I think Coinkite claimed that their Coldcard's were made in Canada for some time. They might have changed that to "assembled in" in a similar way like they changed "open-source" to "verifiable source". I know that Foundation says their devices are assembled in the US, and it's probably the brand that does most of the work locally. But again, the hardware components are manufactured elsewhere.
