I thought players are only sold when their contract with the club has expired or something? Or do they simply walk away from the club and sign a new contract with another club? Or maybe renew their contract with the club they are currently playing for if the wish to continue to play for the club?

Sorry if my question looks noob, but I am just trying to understand why a coach may decided to sell or not sell a player, and just as you have said, if the mentioned players are not around to help their club succeed, what exactly is the reason why they are kept and still being paid when they are not adding any value to the club?
