I am talking about video calls with people I love but can't see face-to-face.

Thank you for your clarifications. Making video calls bridges the gap that distance brings. Many of my friends moved out of the country because of bad economic conditions, and video calls have helped us to keep in touch.
It sounds like an aberration to me. If you’re communicating with someone regularly, it’s almost impossible not to recognize them on social media or, conversely, in real life.
Don't believe everything you see in socal media. There are many applications that can aid criminals change their physical appearance.
