So am asking the forum what do you think is the cause of the rise in gambling related activities in our society is it due to bad economic situation or simply addiction?

I don't see it as a factor other than people gamble because they can afford to spend money. Even if we think it is because of the chase of winning big, I know these people have money. That is why I don't agree it was due to the bad status of the economy, but rather I believe it is a condition where people are living well. If we imagine, poor people don't think this would be their priority. Some might gamble, but the majority are more interested in ensuring their needs can be met than spending their money on gambling.
Addiction might not be a core cause but I think bad economic situation has it's contribution to the rise in gambling activities. In a country where people barely survive gambling becomes the alternate means of survival. Yes there are people who gamble because they can afford it and also people who gamble because they enjoy the fun.

But the majority of gamblers are poor masses seeking for greener pastures from gambling. Maybe they have strong believe someday they will hit a mega win that will change their lives for ever and they keep pushing. As for addiction I believe it's more of a person deficiency than general. Someone can still gamble in a bad economic settings and still have emotional control and discipline.
