The last time Bayer were champions before Alonso was in 2010\2011. So Alonsa has injected new life into the team and Bayer is now considered one of the strongest teams not only in Germany, but also in Europe.
Today's game with Bochum and if Bayer wins, they will be only 3 points behind Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen's appearance was very different before and after Alanso coached Leverkusen. Alanso managed to bring Leverkusen to become the Bundesliga champion for the first time without even losing. So it is true as you said Alanso's presence in Leverkusen has changed a lot starting from the game and the character of the game, even though they failed to defend the title this season does not mean Alanso failed in Leverkusen.
