I searched through google and browse YT videos that mostly promotes VPN especially NordVPN and these videos below (at the current time they talked to it) mentioned it on what OP is talking about.

You said it, most of these were just paid to do make these videos, they were talking shits everything there and sometimes sounds so stupid, well, they have a somewhat a point on how VPN works to mask your identity and activity online but that's will not prevent you getting hacked. Most hacks happen to crypto today is due to phishing, from exchanges to web wallets or even fake apps as well so VPN can't help you on these scenarios, you need knowledge to prevent those hacks to happen.
