Exactly! That is part of their delusion, they continue trying to show "power" by increasing tariffs more than what China increased to say "our tariffs are higher, so we win". It's as if they see the world as a school yard and economy as a pissing contest 
Their damn mistake is they think that every country will follow them towards what they like to happen. But they realize that they made a mistake about what they implement and they just continue because Trump have pride to protect.
This stand off will not bring any good result to both countries.
But I think China has got all the advantage on this war made by Trump since they can start to create alliances with other country also with this will make their market expand more. The problem they would get is their trade will slow down due to what action made by US against them but for sure they can get over with it especially that lots of people in the world need their products.
