Zelensky said he would be there, the US and the "coalition of the willing" want them both there and ... well, there comes the problem: Putin may not be interested. But it is good that at least the US keeps on the accelerated course on Ruzzian diplomacy and have a good understanding why, after three years of war, the main obstacle for any peace remains ... Putin.

Putin is clearly intending to buy time here. There's no way Russia and Ukraine could reach a deal at this moment as both of them would have unrealistic demands.

The west is asking for a ceasefire which would stop Russia from expanding and if that ceasefire holds, the occupied lines would be the defacto boundary and they could live with this without any real peace deal. Specially if European forces are stationed on the line.

The Russia, they want to continue advancing but also wants the west to lift sanctions post war. For that they need to buy time without angering the west much.

If Ukraine troops simply quit fighting, and withdrew towards the center of Ukraine, Russia might keep on advancing for a while. But once Russia figured out that Ukraine had really stopped fighting, they would stop advancing.

It's the formal fighting that Ukraine is continuing that is causing the Russians to continue their fight. It's this that will ultimately lose Ukraine to Russia... if there is not a real WW3 first.
