OP, drawing your closure from a global scale on this issue, I wasn't surprised to find taking care/killing boredom and for pleasure to be among the reasons for elderly folks indulging gambling. I dare say that those reasons too depend on the environment/area/country such sampling is taken from. In well-organized societies where pension funds and gratuities of elderly and retired folks from public service are duely handed over to retirees, they will have little or no worries for how to scout for money or where their next meal is coming from. Hence, they've relaxed minds and funds available to them to indulge past time that gives them joy; even if it means gambling to get pleasure.

Sadly, we can't say "not gambling for money" is what we can find in underdeveloped countries/areas/environments. I take my country as an example where elderly people gamble to double up whatever little money they've.
