It is clear to me that no one will ever change unless they want to. And no matter what other people do, and mostly these are relatives or wives/husbands, they most likely will not change anything. Sometimes they even make the situation worse with their help, so each case must be considered individually. Still, for myself, sometimes I am ready to stop playing for a certain period of time, it is good for me and I understand that everything revolves not only around them, although I am not completely ready to give up gambling completely, at least now, maybe later.

Indeed, the initial decision to get rid of addiction must come from the addicted individual himself, and not from family or friends. Once the addicted person is aware of his condition and genuinely wishes to stop the cycle, then people around him can be very helpful and supportive. On the other hand, when the addicted person just uses the support he has access to in order to fuels his addiction by borrowing money or victimizing himself, unfortunatelly there is nothing other people can do to help him.

Personally, I think people around can't suffer or sacrifice their own lives because a problem individual. Of course they can help, but respecting their personal limits which can't be surpassed, for their own good. A problem individual is really exhausting for the family to cope with, and in the end, free will speaks louder and it's the decisive factor.
