This helps to get noticed by at least a few merit sources and other members who have extra merit to send.

I also think that it is pretty normal to receive some increased amount of merits when you are close to your next rank. I have experienced this myself twice, once when I was about to become a full-member, @Royse sent me 15 merits for this, and when I was about to become Sr.-member @theymo.s himself gave 10 merits to me for this Cheesy

All I can say is if you are genuinely engaging yourself in discussions, members will notice you. So I don't think anything wrong with the member in question getting a little bit extra merits for his posts. Honestly, too much discussion on merit sending will only deter some members from sending merits to new accounts easily. You will also have your fair share in due time, don't worry mate Wink

I think your posts were way better than the posts mentioned in the OP.

I don't think the user deserved 25 merits for that posts. But, merit sources are free to do whatever they want with their smerits
