That's my take here as well. Just a coincidence that you should be winning for the bets that you haven't placed and lost the ones that you did place. There's no superstitious belief here. He was just not lucky when he placed his bet for the losing ones. So the OP should not overthink on this kind of happenings. Because like it or not, we are just giving some meanings to those events that really has no connection with anything.

Well, people will always find a connection to something even if there's nothing in there. It will give them good feeling so be it. But the reality is - we are only giving so much meanings to everything that is happening. I don't think there is indeed an actual connection on such situation.
