The distance between Australia the U.S. West Coast is only 1212k km, and there exist some solid direct cable routes between Australia and the U.S.; there could be some very rare cases where connecting to an EU-based server is slightly faster, but I would say in at least 90% of cases, Australia to U.S. will have less latency compared to Australia to EU.

For example, ping results from Sydney to LA are 160ms, to Houston is 187ms,and to Washington is 197ms, on the other hand, it's 241ms to Barcelona and 265ms to Paris.

You can always use tools like https://wondernetwork.com/pings to get some solid ping results of places you can't physically access.
