I'm mostly wondering why he didn't try to join the Libertarian party and make some adjustments where appropriate instead.

Isn't that obvious? He likes to be seen as inventor, that's why when he makes hostile takeovers he is placing himself as a founder.
Man even renamed Twitter so that it would seem more like his creation. Libertarian party wouldn't be as easy to take over.

Also it's not very libertarian to become rich from government contracts., so i am willing to bet many libertarians in that party don't see him as one.
