It is normal, especially when you are playing an extreme volatility slots game. I have lots of experience like that, getting 0 wins on a bonus round or free spins.

I noticed that when one is playing on the same slots for too long, it gets harder to get a good win, and most of the time, when the free spin is triggered, it often gives a crappy result.

This is definitely not normal although some will argue that it is possible. I have not had such experience before although I don't play that particular slot game. If I had such free spin in my favorite slot game, I will be sure of winning something big. Maybe it depends on the game or provider and it will wise to try other games.

You are one lucky person because getting a 0 win from a free spin is normal, you can even see streamers gets the same result often times when they do bonus buys.
