Not only on stake you can see gamblers lose and not be unhappy, it's a natural thing that we see somehow each time we discover that we were unable to attain a particular goal, in gambling, when we play bets, we expect to make it to winning, not because of the money we stand to earn, but for the reason that we are able to make a right prediction and it l works and we are accurate in it, it's a kind of entertainment that test on our various abilities in doing something and getting it right.

Well put, pattern recognition definitely play a huge part, we constantly seek to find a pattern to 'chaos' few things are as satisfying for our brain as the feeling of succeeding in doing so.
