Their first match was indeed very disappointing. Fans had high hopes of seeing Man City return to their glory from the previous season, but that all fell apart in the first match of the EPL season. The defeat against Tottenham was particularly embarrassing, even without a single goal.
However, Pep still strongly believes that this is all part of the process and that they will deliver even better progress going forward. They are working. Will you believe this? As what Pep said after the defeat:
Source: Pep's post-match thoughtsThat wasn’t their first game though, their first game was against Wolves and they defeated wolves by 4 goals to 2. It is in their second league game to Tottenham that City lost by 2 goals to nil. It was quite an embarrassing loss for Guardiola, letting Spurs defeat them at the Etihad twice in a row. If Pep believes they will get better I say that’s the mentality every manager should have, btw the season is just getting started there is so much more to unfold.
Pep is a professional coach and will certainly strive to build the players' mentality and stamina to prevent them from dropping. The Man City players certainly didn't expect Tottenham to be that good on the pitch. However, I think Man City certainly has the potential to bounce back, as they were clearly superior in terms of possession. However, it seems Pep didn't strategize well, for example, by strengthening the back line. I saw in the video footage that Man City's back line was weak, allowing Tottenham players to dribble past and break through the Man City defenders. I also saw Man City's defense lacked agility.
That's absolutely true, considering the season has only just begun. There's certainly still time for Pep to improve Man City, and there are certainly plenty of opportunities for Man City to improve their performance this season. However, Tottenham's immense strength will certainly make the Premier League more exciting, as who knows, Tottenham could become a barrier for strong teams like Liverpool and Arsenal to win trophies this season.
