This was likely because his slow and careful batting style which works well in Test matches was seen as bad fit for faster more aggressive style of play needed in IPL. With this many fans still wanted to see him get chance to show what he could do in shorter games.

India is a very strong team in cricket and they are getting a lot of new cricketers all the time, in that case, if a player gets out of the national team once, then it becomes quite difficult for him to play for India next time. We have not seen Cheteshwar Pujara in Test cricket for a long time, maybe due to bad form or injury, he may be absent from the team but all the players who are playing in his place in the India team have performed brilliantly so maybe we will not see him in the India team wearing the white jersey again in the future.
Even so, he is over 37 years old so the chances are very slim.
