Layer 2 solutions such as the Lightning Network are often considered the best approach to scale Bitcoin without compromising its fundamental principles. Yet, questions remain:
Can Lightning (or other Layer 2 protocols) eventually handle the majority of Bitcoin transactions securely?
Layer 2 is already being implemented but not vastly yet. Majority of people see it difficult to set up a lightning channel and aside from that layer 2 is best for mainly micro payments. Bigger payments can put your coins at risk if the channel is compromised.

The importance and maximum use of the lightning network is usually when fees are very high and transactions are becoming to expensive to consolidate, else during periods like this when fees are low and stable on chain is almost as fast as using lightning network with almost same fees.
