Starting from curiosity to addiction, that's the story of the average gambler in my opinion.
You're right about one thing, the influence of friends or social circles can backfire if not handled wisely. Gambling isn't a safe activity, of course due to the risks, but there's a thrill to be had and many people find it challenging. Many of them get caught up in the illusion of a big win, they try to get it, but then they find it hard to get back to normal.

I know gambling is fun and challenging, but if a gambler does it irresponsibly, they're bound to face big problems. Today I met an old friend who, as far as I know he is a gambling addict. He came to me and asked for a loan to pay off another loan. That was clearly bad for me and he was truly experiencing negative consequences from his gambling.

Scenarios like this, I wouldn't even border giving them any loan because he is definitely not gonna do anything good with that money aside from going back to chase some loses. Sometimes being broke can help you think back to see how far you've actually made some errors that led to your current state and that is what most people need because you may spend some time advising them but to them your advise may look irrelevant because gamble was somehow in their favour but when things turn upside down, then they'll value your advise and wished they had listened to you. Once I notice you're an addict I can loan you, because it'll be like giving a child a knife to play with.
