Money is not all that important as people seem to assume. In fact, I would go as far as to say that a rich man is nothing but a collector. The truly valuable things in life should never be given away, especially not on some bet.

One of the things you mentioned (mug from your father) is a good example. An gift from a beloved family member has far more value than any amount of money (depending on how much you value the memory of your father, or course- but that is one such an example).
