Theoretically, you can have 1 hardware wallet on which you will generate two different seeds, one for Bitcoin, the other for alts, but that seems even less practical to me than having 2 devices. Anyone who has a somewhat decent value in Bitcoin or other crypto should have at least 2 devices. If you ever find yourself in any sort of emergency and the main device fails, you will regret it a lot. Sure you can recover it using other software wallets but that compromises the whole setup because the person didn't want to spend another $150? It involves extra risks relating to the safety of your mobile or desktop device. The cost for 2 devices is pretty low for the extra usability it provides. I always buy a second one if I decided to stick with a particular HW wallet.
