As they say have a backup plan and then a backup of the backup.
It works for everything, including bitcoin.
Going to travel? Have cash with you but also have a card, what if both of them fail somehow like your cash gets stolen and card blocked? Have a third backup plan, for instance a friend who you trust to cover your expenses, who also has their cash and card with them.
It's the same with bitcoin. Hardware wallets aren't safe enough when we're talking about life savings. Have a hardware wallet, a backup seed, or a private key, and if you can also another backup somewhere else. If you can have multiple wallet one hot for your expenses and a cold wallet with double backup. I keep mine in a fireproof safe that's bolted to the floor.
Air gapp is a bit harder to use but much better security, I like it.
With my hardware wallet I have to connect it to my computer and unlock it to be able to pay.
An airgapped device can be reconnected to the Internet and you can propagate a transaction in seconds. The difference is that instead of connecting a wallet to your computer you're connecting the computer to the network for a few seconds.
