Yes an addicted gambler can work themselves out of gambling  at any time they decide to work them selves out of it. You only need to want to work on yourself whenever you see that you are no longer happy with how addicted you have been gambling.  The reason why some of them do find it difficult  to exit is because  they literally have not accepted that gambling is affecting them already and they do not want to continue in that direct of addiction they have been and so they find it hard and make it look like it is hard to quit addiction. .
It's not that simple to work oneself out of gambling addiction mate, don't make it sound like it's that easy especially when you haven't had an experience in it to know how it's like to be a gambling addict. People that have been into that ugly grip of gambling addiction would explain better, because it's something they would not wish on their worst enemy.
Like we all know, it’s not really that easy to just break out from gambling addiction, especially when it has eaten really deep into the person… addiction is a virus that eats deep into the victim’s mind, his emotions and most time even affect their relationship with people around them.
In my own POV, it takes more than just willpower to break out of it, it also requires support systems, in most cases, professional help to truly help a victim break out from it.
Thank you @WhoYouCantKill for doing much justice to this discussion because it seems not many persons has an understanding of the destruction addiction can cause to its victim making him a slave to it. It takes the conscious support of close friends, family and professional support to gradually reform the mind and emotions of the victim and not by just the personal will of the victim.
