We did figure out what happened and it really is good news. So, at block 15800, POW blocks stopped generating; what we did not factor in was that POW/POS hybrid started before that point. This is why POW ended early, and this is why less coins were generated. In the end this means that there are far fewer coins then originally planned. There is now a max coin count of ~3.5mil coins + 6% interest yearly. This is a mistake on our part, but is very good for investors. This should clear up everything!
